DIY Breakable Chocolate Heart Tutorial
Sure, a box of chocolate is a nice gift for your Valentine. But why not take things up a notch this year and give a fun gift that really WOWs them? We have fallen head over heels for this playful edible gift idea…
Make a Breakable Chocolate Heart for someone you love and fill it with candy, truffles, chocolate-covered strawberries, or even an engagement ring! Then give it as a tasty surprise along with a tiny hammer for smashing, and let the recipient have at it.
You can make one heart mold to place over the top of a gift or treat. Or make 2 heart molds to fuse together for a solid heart box. Here we share tips for the best tools and chocolate to use, plus easy steps to create a fabulous treat that everyone will love!
Equipment Needed to Make a Breakable Candy Heart with Chocolate
You can find breakable Chocolate heart mold sets on Amazon and in craft stores. Some of them come with multiple sizes of heart molds, letter molds to create words for the outside of your heart, and several hammers.
You’ll also need:
- Microwave-safe bowl
- Piping bag or squirt bottle
- Rubber gloves for handling chocolate
If gifting these hearts you will most likely want to purchase cute bakery boxes as well.
The Best Chocolate For Making Breakable Hearts
For this recipe, you need chocolate melting wafers, also known as couverture chocolate.
Couverture is incredibly rich chocolate that has a very high cocoa butter content. It’s a more “pure” ingredient when compared to most chocolate candies, which are made with milk and other additives. Because of the quality it also melts terrifically, has a beautiful shine, and tastes deliciously decadent.
You can use your choice of dark, milk, or white couverture chocolate. Or use more than one type and layer by layer create a marbled heart to smash.
Ideas For How to Decorate a Chocolate Heart to Smash
You can get super creative with this edible gift!
Colorful sprinkles in all kinds of fun shapes, glitter sprinkles, nonpareils, and sanding sugar are great to add some flair to the outside of the hearts.
Use some leftover melted chocolate as a “glue” to decorate with your own unique touch! The chocolate can even be used to create letters and shapes, then stuck to the heart with – you guessed it – a bit more chocolate.
How to Make a Breakable Chocolate Heart
Before we get started: 20 ounces of chocolate will make two large breakable chocolate heart halves. You can give them away separately covering a gift or fuse them together to make one larger puffy heart.
For each mold, place 10 ounces of chocolate melting wafers in a microwave-safe bowl. Remove one handful of chocolate wafers to add later. This helps to retain the glossy exterior of the chocolate. (AKA cheaters’ tempering!)
Microwave the chocolate wafers in one-minute increments, stirring well between each minute. This will take approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Once the chocolate is mostly melted, add in the last handful of chocolate wafers. Stir vigorously to melt those wafers into the chocolate without placing them back in the microwave.
Tap the microwave-safe bowl gently on the countertop to remove as many large bubbles as possible. Then pour the chocolate into the heart mold. Swirl around the mold making sure the chocolate reaches up to the edge on all sides.
Then pour the excess chocolate back into the bowl.
Place the heart mold in the refrigerator and chill for at least five minutes.
If needed, reheat the remaining chocolate in the bowl for about 30 seconds. Then pour the chocolate back into the heart mold and swirl around creating a second coat of chocolate. Pour the excess chocolate out of the heart again. Place the mold back in the refrigerator to harden for 5 minutes.

Once the chocolate heart is very firm, gently pull the mold away from each side of the heart. Once the edges are loose, carefully flip the heart over and gently peel off the mold.
Repeat this process with the remaining 10 ounces of chocolate.
Once both heart halves are made, you can use any excess chocolate for decorating.
Pro Tip: Be careful when touching the chocolate heart. Couverture chocolate has a lovely glossy finish. When you touch it, you dull the glossy sheen and leave fingerprints. Wearing clean rubber/plastic gloves helps with this.
If making one large solid heart with both halves, decorate just the top.
Fill the bottom with gifts and edible goodies.
To close the hearts, pipe a chocolate line around the edges and gently lay the top over the bottom to seal.

How to Decorate and Gift a Chocolate Heart to Smash
- Use a piping bag to drizzle a zigzag around the bottom edge of the heart, like we did, and quickly add sprinkles before the chocolate dries.
- Drizzle chocolate lines over the top of the heart and quickly add sprinkles to create patterns on top of the heart.
- Use gold or silver edible powder to brush a design over the top of a heart.
- Use the additional chocolate to create letters and write a message on the top of your heart. Then attach them with melted chocolate.
Give your heart away in a pretty box with a small hammer, so your loved one will know what to do!
