Why We Love This Recipe

You’ve heard of baked brie wrapped in puff pastry, but have you ever considered baking Camembert cheese? If not, this easy 4-ingredient Baked Camembert Cheese recipe is your sign to go for it!

Camembert is a great cheese to bake and serve as a molten dip. Skip the puff pastry and bake it right in the rind. Then use the wooden box it comes in for serving to present a rustic yet elevated appetizer!

We top the warm, gooey cheese with sautéed shallots and Asian sweet chili sauce for an extra punch of flavor. Pair with fresh fruit and crackers or slices of baguette for a real crowd-pleasing dish.

What’s the Difference Between Brie and Camembert cheese?

Camembert is a soft pungent cheese, very similar to Brie. Both are fresh cheeses, wrapped in an edible rind. They can both be served cold, room temperature, or warm and melty.

However, Brie has a milder buttery flavor, while Camembert is known for a more robust earthy flavor and aroma. It’s delightful to pair with bold sweet chili sauce and sautéed shallots!

Ingredients You Need

  • Camembert cheese – a flavorful and melty cheese that’s delicious with both sweet and savory ingredients.
  • Asian sweet chili sauce – slightly spicy, mostly sweet, and wonderfully tangy
  • Shallots – peeled and sliced thin
  • Sesame oil – or other high-heat oil for sautéing, like avocado or olive oil

Plus your choice of optional toppings and goodies. (We’ve got some great suggestions below!)

Ingredients you need: wheel of cheese, bottle of sweet chili sauce, sesame oil, and whole shallots.

How to Make this Baked Camembert Recipe

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Open the Camembert cheese box and set it aside. Remove all plastic or foil wrapping from the cheese wheel. Place the cheese wheel back in the wooden box. Carefully cut along the top rim of the cheese to create a lid. Do not pull off the top.

Sharp knife slicing through the top rind of the cheese.

Place the cheese wheel on a rimmed baking sheet. Once the oven is hot, bake for 15 minutes to soften the cheese. (Sometimes the rim wooden box will pop open under heat. In this case, place the open box back into the lid to hold it together once it comes out of the oven.)

While the Camembert is in the oven, thinly slice the shallots.

Next, place a small skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sesame oil and shallots. Sauté for 8 to 10 minutes to soften and caramelize. It’s OK if the shallots turn dark, just be sure to keep the temperature low so they don’t taste burnt.

Once the Camembert is out of the oven, carefully move it to a serving platter.

Remove the lid on top of the cheese.

Recipe Variations

  • We love the intensity of Camembert. However, you can make the same recipe using Brie cheese.
  • The Asian sweet chili sauce is delicious to balance the rich creaminess of the cheese. However, feel free to swap with other toppings if you like! Try this baked camembert recipe with a savory bourbon glaze or balsamic reduction. It’s also delicious with our homemade Hot Pepper Jelly!
  • Speaking of – for a sweeter appetizer, substitute the chili sauce with your favorite jam, chutney, preserves, or drizzle of honey. I do recommend skipping the shallots, though.
  • If you’d like to bake outside of the box, simply place the cheese wheel on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Serving Suggestions

The baked cheese is best to enjoy immediately while warm. Serve with a variety of crackers, baguette slices, and fresh fruit around the cheese.

Our personal favorites are an assortment of green and red grapes. However, other sweet and hearty fruits like strawberries, apples, or pear slices are all fabulous options!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where to buy Camembert Cheese?

Typically Camembert is readily available in the international cheeses sections of most grocery stores. You also can order online from several retailers that will ship directly to you.

How long does a Camembert go in the oven?

This recipe only requires 15 minutes of baking. Any longer and that molten goodness will turn into a runny river of cheese.

How long do leftovers last?

It is best to serve right away while hot from the oven

But technically you can cool and keep any leftovers in the fridge for a day or so. You might consider eating leftovers cold, though, as reheating the cheese with sweet chili sauce and sautéed shallots will drastically change the overall taste and texture.
