Kitchen Makeover Day 4: Lighting
There’s nothing like having the right lights in a room. Lighting creates ambiance better than any other element of design.
A little while back a friend turned me on to Barn Light Electric.
Barn Light Electric a lighting company that makes vintage (and modern) porcelain enamel lighting, the way lights were made in the early 1900’s. Over the years, big manufacturers stopped making porcelain enamel lighting because it was much cheaper to powder coat lights. Yet as production prices went down, quality went with it.
Porcelain enamel lightening is extremely durable. It’s almost impossible to scratch, chip, or burn, and the color never fades.
Barn Light Electric makes their premium quality lights right here in the US. Craftsmen shape and coat each light individually, then bake on the porcelain in a high heat oven. This unique art was almost lost over the years, yet the passion of Barn Light Electric owner Bryan Scott has kept it alive.
Check out this video clip with his story.
I had such a fun time picking out my new Barn Lights.
You actually get to customize your lights from Barn Light Electric, selecting not only the color of porcelain enamel, but the shade shape and size, type of cord, exact length of solid stem mount, mounting color and style, wire cage and accessories. With the LED lights you can choose higher lumens for super bright lights if needed.
Once you order your Barn Lights, they are crafted just for you!
We decided to go with LED lights to save energy and provide ultra bright white light in the kitchen, for photography purposes.
I picked these Ivanhoe Wilcox Deep Bowl LED Pendants in an iridescent “metallic chrome” porcelain finish. We put them on a dimmer so we could have lower lighting for everyday use and bright lights when shooting food photography.
We also selected the standard black cord because it’s thick and heat resistant, since one of the lights hangs over a burner.
I love these lights… the shape, the shimmering finish, the warm inviting glow, and the fact that they will last longer than I do.

Disclosure: Barn Light Electric provided LED pendant lights for my new kitchen. All opinions are my own, as always.
