I haven’t removed the essential elements that make it special such as tender chicken, hearty cheese tortellini, and even a little cream. I’ve just reduced certain ingredients, so you can feel good about serving this Creamy Chicken Tortellini Soup to your family.
And maybe even having seconds.
Creamy Chicken Tortellini Soup
I used plenty of fresh veggies and herbs, boneless skinless chicken breasts, and DeLallo Three Cheese Tortellini found in the dried pasta section of your grocery store.

Chicken Tortellini Soup Recipe
I stay stocked up on DeLallo olives, olive oil, pasta, and tomatoes. This dried tortellini is a marvelous pantry item, because it allows you to keep rich luxurious tortellini on hand all the time.
Adding it to this Creamy Chicken Tortellini Soup gives it the extra something that makes it a true fall favorite.
Just look at the hearty chunks of shredded chicken, fresh vegetables, and glorious cheese-filled tortellini. It’s a satisfying meal any night of the week.
What Ingredients You Will Need
- DeLallo Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Large Sweet Onion – peeled and chopped
- Red Bell Pepper – seeded and chopped
- Carrots – sliced
- Minced Garlic Cloves
- Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast
- Chicken Broth
- DeLallo Three-Cheese Tortellini Pasta
- Heavy Cream
- Packed Frozen Spinach – or fresh baby spinach leaves
- Fresh Chopped Parsley
- Dried Thyme Leaves – or fresh thyme leaves
- Crushed Red Pepper
- Salt and Pepper
How To Make Chicken Tortellini Soup
This Creamy Chicken Tortellini Soup is quick and easy to make, yet offers so much wow-factor, your family will ask for it again and again!
- Saute. Place a large sauce pot over medium heat. Add the olive oil and chopped onions. Saute for 3 minutes to soften. Then add the chopped bell pepper, carrots, and garlic. Saute another 3 minutes.
- Simmer. Add whole raw chicken breasts, chicken broth, dried thyme, crushed red pepper, salt, and ground black pepper to the pot. Bring to a simmer. Lower the heat a little and simmer for 15 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through. Remove the chicken and place on a cutting board.
- Cook Pasta. Turn the heat back to medium. With the broth still simmering, stir in the DeLallo Three Cheese Tortellini. Stir well so it doesn’t stick together. Then chop or shred the chicken and place back in the soup.
- Cream and Season. Once the tortellini is cooked through, about 10-14 minutes, turn off the heat. Stir in heavy cream, spinach, and parsley. Add a little more cream if desired. Taste, then salt and pepper as needed.

How Long Do These Leftovers Last?
You can store this recipe in your fridge inside an airtight container for 3 to 4 days.
Can I Freeze This Recipe?
You can freeze it with the pasta. Just make sure to thaw it at room temperature, undisturbed, before stirring or reheating. If you try to heat and thaw at the same time, the tortellini will disintegrate.
Is 2 tablespoons of frozen spinach a typo?
No, the frozen spinach is cooked down and concentrated. If using fresh spinach, use ½-¾ cup.
Can I Make This In The Crockpot?
Yes! Make sure to sauté the veggies on the stovetop first. Then you can slow cook the soup (without the pasta) for 3-4 hours on high, or 6-8 hours on low. I would add in the pasta only 30 minutes before serving.
Can I Use Pre-Cooked Chicken?
Yes! In a pinch, adding leftover or rotisserie chicken is a great idea. Be sure to add it in when you add the tortellini.

Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon DeLallo Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1 large sweet onion, peeled and chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
- 2 cups carrots, sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 1/4 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast (2 large breasts)
- 9 cups chicken broth
- 8.8 ounces DeLallo Three-Cheese Tortellini Pasta
- 1/4 – 1/3 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons packed frozen spinach or 1/2 cup fresh baby spinach leaves
- 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme leaves or 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
- Salt and pepper
Instructions
- Place a large sauce pot over medium heat. Add the olive oil and chopped onions. Saute for 3 minutes to soften. Then add the chopped bell pepper, carrots, and garlic. Saute another 3 minutes.
- Add whole raw chicken breasts, chicken broth, dried thyme, crushed red pepper, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper to the pot. Bring to a simmer. Lower the heat a little and simmer 15 minutes, until the chicken in cooked through. Remove the chicken and place on a cutting board.
- Turn the heat back to medium. With the broth still simmering, stir in the DeLallo Three Cheese Tortellini. Stir well so it doesn’t stick together. Then chop or shred the chicken and place back in the soup.

Can you use frozen tortellini

Yes, you can. Just adjust the cooking time according to the package instructions. :)
On your point about stirring the tortellini to not stick together, you could first put the tortellini in a bowl, and a bit of olive oil, and stir it around to get an even distribution. You can also put it in a container with a lid, add the torts and olive oil, put the lid on and shake it around.
This is my first time making tortellini soup and it was a home run. I may have changed this recipe too much to give it an honest review but we love the results regardless. I used homemade chicken and chicken stock I had frozen earlier in the year instead of using raw chicken breasts and stock. The dried thyme was perfect in this soup and so was the amount of cream. It was just enough and did not make it really creamy. I also used chicken tortellini because my family is not fond of the cheese. It was very good and I served it with a crusty Italian bread. A keeper recipe for sure.
This recipe is perfection. I added basil and Italian seasoning and a tad bit of butter to the pan before sautéing the onions and garlic. Otherwise I made it exactly like it says and it was unbelievably good, the kind of thing that you’d order in a nice Italian restaurant, but homemade is better.
Finished it off with a tablespoon of freshly grated Romano and served with slices of homemade “everything” French bread.
Made this delicious soup today for a relaxing Sunday. Wouldn’t change any part of this recipe!!

I made this with Rotisserie chicken and added just before the Tortilini. This recipe was a huge hit with my family. Very hearty and filling. Has a nice bit of spice with the red pepper flakes. Served with some crunchy French bread. Very easy and delicious!!

So delicious! The price for chicken thigh was lower, so I used thighs, and I browned them in a pan, then added to the soup so they could finish cooking through. I added chopped celery, and omitted the spinach and parsley because I didn’t have those ingredients. I used a cheese & spinach tortellini. This is definitely one of the best soups I’ve ever tasted.

This was a wonderful “snow day” soup for us. If your tortellini is already cooked, put less chicken broth. Mine were and I cut the chicken broth to 7 cups; it was perfect!

I found this recipe a couple of years ago and we love it! Our son lost his job in NYC because of the pandemic and he, his wife and 3 kids moved in with us in June in Pittsburgh. We have had this several times and it’s great for a crowd – goes a long way and it’s something the kids will usually eat!!! Thank you.
The recipe was very good, but I used on 4 cups of broth; a better consistency for us.
This is my favorite soup to make!!! It’s a huge hit. One thing I suggest to try is adding an already shredded rotisserie chicken!! It’s more flavorful! (And easier too) I still followed the same directions and let the broth simmer for the same amount of time and then added the shredded chicken!

I am going to be using a crock ot to make this recipe! for the crream, do i add it into cook for the 6-8 hours or when should i put it in? also can i put the tortellini in uncooked and it will cook in the soup prior to serving or do I have to preboil?

Add the cream at the end with the pasta. If the soup is simmering well, stir in the dried pasta and cream. Then let the pasta simmer another 20-30 minutes until soft. Hope this helps! :)

Sure! You can definitely adjust this for the slow cooker… Sauté the veggies on the stovetop as directed. Then place everything except the tortellini in the crockpot. Cook on LOW for 6-8 hours, or on HIGH for 3-4 hours. Shred the chicken and add it back to the pot, along with the tortellini. Cover and slow cooker another 20-30 minutes to cook the pasta.
This is hands down my favorite recipe. It’s a bit of work to make, but it is so worth the reward. I’m so happy it’s coming up on soup season so I can start making this gem again. So good!

Quick and easy – I too added a little extra spinach. Next time I might follow the one user’s suggestion and add the rind of some parmesan – for now I just sprinkled some grated on top to finish it when serving. This is yummy. I subbed a rotisserie chicken for the chicken breasts and made the broth the day before from the skin and bones.

I want to double the recipe for a church pot luck on Friday. But 18 cups of chicken broth seems excessive. Is that the correct measurement? So that’s supposed to be 12 servings if I double it.

Yes, it’s 9 cups of broth per recipe, so unless you have an enormous crockpot, a double recipe may not fit. Also, these are good sized bowl portions, so if you are using small disposable bowls, it will go further.

If using a crockpot: We added the cream at the beginning of the cooking process and it curdled. We had to use a strainer to take out as much as we could. Upon looking it up later, with crockpots any cream or milk should be added at the very end. Besides that, the recipe was delicious! Good blend of spices!

Tastes good, but would have been better with out the 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes I added. Very spicy!! 🌶🌶 I tried adding more cream, but it was still spicy. Recipe calls for 1/2 tsp. I will eliminate that ingredient next time! Would add more tortellini to this recipe for amount of broth (1/2 pkg. or so).
I prefer adding shredded rotisserie chicken at the end too. The chicken gets done quickly, so watch carefully so you don’t over cook it.

Yes, prepackaged foods are always the culprit.
Try using unsalted broth in soup recipes. You can always adjust upwards if it needs more salt.
Love this soup so much! It’s now in our regular rotation and I’m making an extra batch this week to take to a mom friend who just had a baby! My only change is adding a bunch more spinach. I always use fresh and it’s probably about 2 cups then chopped before throwing in. So delicious!

I don’t see why not! Just be sure to thaw it completely at room temperature, before stirring or heating, to protect the pasta from breaking up.

I have made this soup three times now , and its always a most delicious meal. I still can’t believe that parsley, thyme, garlic and chicken stock can make a soup taste so good. Also, cheese tortellini is a fantastic addition. Thanks for posting this awesome recipe !!

Yes! Make sure to sauté the veggies on the stovetop first. Then you can slow cook the soup (without the pasta) for 3-4 hours on high, or 6-8 hours on low. I would add the pasta in 30 minutes before serving. :)

This recipe is delicious! I made it in a crockpot. I put in the chicken, broth, veggies (EXCEPT the spinach) and spices to cook on low for 6 hours. Then I added the cream (substituted a whole can of coconut milk), spinach, tortellini (19oz frozen) and the fresh parsley and cooked for 45 more minutes. I snuck in a ton of extra fresh spinach and it still turned out amazing. Thanks for the recipe!

This soup is amazing! I have made it several times and myself and my husband and we LOVE it. We are not crazy for bell peppers in our soup so I substituted them with mushrooms and it was a huge hit. I also suggest using fresh spinach-it makes a big difference. Also, don’t go crazy using the name brand tortellini, I used stop n shop brand and it was great. Definitely make this soup you will not be disappointed!
Made it as written, minus 1/ 2 tsp thyme bc my son doesnt like thyme. It was very good. Whole family enjoyed it. Can taste the spice flavor, but its not spicy.

No, the frozen spinach is cooked down and concentrated. If using fresh spinach, use 1/2 cup.
Instead of heavy cream I used a pack of ranch dressing. What I had on hand at the time.. But still very good with cornbread.. 😄

You can freeze it with the pasta. Just make sure to thaw it at room temperature, undisturbed, before stirring or reheating. :)

I found if you cook the pasta separately, drain, and add pasta to the individual bowls of chicken soup, you can store the soup without breaking down the pasta. I refridgerate the leftover pasta and soup and add a handful to each bowl the next day and it tastes and looks great. I learned to do this when I make any soup involving rice or pasta as some members of family like pasta while others don’t and the same with turkey rice soup from Thanksgiving.

I think your calorie counter may be off. You note this recipe is 172 calories. However, the package of tortellini is 900 calories or 165 calories/servings for 6 servings. Just adding the chicken in at 77 calories/serving means this recipe is ~240 calories. Per my calculation, this recipe clocks in around 300-400 calories.

We made this tonight for dinner and it is excellent! We love soups especially in fall. Today was the perfect weather to try this out and we are so glad we did!
This soup has become a staple in our house! We love it! I do make some slight variations. Instead of adding Bell pepper and crushed red pepper I use chopped celery and sometimes leek. I also use fresh chopped spinach. I recently added finely chopped kale and that was good too! The kicker for our house though is instead of adding heavy cream we add a few tablespoons of sour cream and shredded parmesan cheese! This gives the soup a little tang, which we like!
I made this tonight for the first time. I didn’t change a thing, and it was absolutely delicious. Thanks for the recipe. :)

I made this with trepidations as the last couple of recipes I’ve made from Pinterest have fallen short. It was wonderful. I could not find the mentioned tortellini but what I used was fine. I used a fresh spinach and arugula mix and it was great. The amount of red pepper was just enough . I’ll definitely make this again.

This soup is delicious! I added some celery, and more fresh parsley. I also added a little Garam Masala. Next time, I may add coconut milk instead of the heavy cream. This soup has tons of tweaking possibilities!

I made it tonight. I only used five cups of broth (Better Than Boullion and water), and thickened it with about two teaspoons of cornstarch. Served it with Cheddar Bay biscuits. My husband isn’t much of a soup guy, but I enjoyed it. Thanks.

Very good. A tad too spicy. A bit too thin. At the end I thickened it a bit with cream and flour mix.

I made this tonight…..it’s really good! The thyme is a little over powering so next time I may use less. I also added a little more cream to it and used shredded canned chicken. Overall it’s delicious….even the kids loved it!

i love this recipe. I make it about once a month. the thing i love about it is that i normally have most of the ingredients and can also just kind of throw in whatever i have around the house too. Tonight i had few strips of bacon leftover, i cooked those up first and then cooked the onions in it and followed the rest of the recipe. It turned out fantastic! i also always use a handful of fresh spinach because that is generally what i have around. thanks for the recipe! this also makes a VERY hardy 6 servings, if you have a little side of bread or something with it, you can definitely get a few more servings.

It probably will. But that doesn’t mean it can’t taste great. Curious, do vegetarian friends of yours eat dairy? If not, you will also need to substitute the cheese tortellini and the cream. Try spinach filled Tortellini instead of cheese, and coconut or cashew milk instead of cream. You can also thicken the soup with a small amount of mashed potato, pureed in a blender. It will be different but probably still taste outstanding.
This soup was amazing. Last night I had left over chicken, so I used shredded chicken from last night in the soup instead of cooking the chicken in the soup. I also added extra heavy cream. My husband loved this. He is taking it to work tomorrow’s work tomorow to share with his co-workers. We couldn’t possibly eat it all.

This is the MOST delicious thing I have made in a long time. I followed the recipe pretty much to the letter. Didn’t really measure. Eyeballed the seasonings and used chicken and mozzarella tortellini rather than three cheese, and three chicken breasts not two. Adding the cream is where the magic happens. It’s not thick, but there is a creamy consistency to it. Absolutely fantastic!!!!!

Soups usually last about a week in the refrigerator. However, the pasta will absorb the broth and break up after the first 3-4 days.

I made this EXACTLY as written with one minor exception: I left out the crushed red pepper since I didn’t have any. Everything else was the same, and it was soooooo delicious! I love soup, and this really hit the spot. I will say that because of the tortellini, it was incredibly filling, so plan to eat less than you normally would with soup. I made a small bowl and still ended up not finishing it because it was so filling. Brava!

Honwant to make this ahead for a party. Would this be ok to keep in a crockpot or will noodles get funky??

If you plan to make the soup a day or two ahead, I would make the soup base, but not add the pasta until the day of the party. Then bring it to a boil before your guests arrive, and simmer as directed. You can put it in a crockpot to keep it warm after that. :)
