Sausage Roll Crazy Bread Recipe
5-Ingredient Sausage Roll Crazy Bread Recipe: Little Pull-Apart Pigs In A Blanket connected by pillowy cheesy parmesan bread. Served with zesty marinara sauce for dipping!
Crazy Over Crazy Bread
I am a child of the eighties.
That means I spent my formidable years in an era when MTV was new and they actually played music all day.
When you peg-rolled (or french rolled) your jeans.
When aqua colored eyeliner was totally tubular.
When patriotism was also totally rad.
And when Little Caesar’s Pizza was taking over the nation, one strip mall at a time. Pizza Pizza.
What I remember most about Little Caesar’s is that mom would always pick up our pizzas with an order of Crazy Bread.
Crazy Bread: Puffy bread sticks coated in butter and parmesan cheese.
I have no recollection of the quality of Little Caesar’s pizza. However, the Crazy Bread was/is so addictive I sigh every time I think about it

Yet I wanted to replicate it in a way that made it even more exciting.
Crazy Bread for the new Millenium so to speak. Possibly incorporating another 80’s favorite… Lil’ Smokies.
Introducing our Sausage Roll Crazy Bread Recipe. You’re welcome. *wink*
You should know, I had several recipe failures in the testing process of this recipe. Meaning, it took me a few attempts to get this just the way I wanted it.
I tested different store-bought and homemade doughs, various forms of wrapping, and even different methods to apply the butter and cheese to the top.
(Can you imagine how many sighs took place during that process?!)
In the end, the final version requires only 5-ingredients, making
Gnarly!
Sausage Roll Crazy Bread Recipe Ingredients
- Pizza Dough. Fresh for the deli, or frozen-thawed from the freezer section.
- Lil’ Smokies. Mini sausages found near the hot dogs. You can use turkey or beef smokies.
- Butter. To brush over the dough. Twice.
- Parmesan Cheese. To sprinkle over the top.
- Marinara Sauce. For dipping!
Pigs In A Blanket
My crazy bread recipe is essentially dozens of little Pigs In a Blanket (or mini sausage rolls) wrapped in crazy bread.
They are all connected by one long piece of dough. However, don’t worry, you won’t be rolling out an 8-foot dough rope.
Instead, you will roll out pizza dough in the shape of a pizza crust, then use a pizza cutter to cut it into thin strips.
The strips are attached together as you wrap the lil’ smokies. This makes assembly much easier to handle.
How To Make Sausage Roll Crazy Bread Recipe
- Roll and cut the dough. Stretch or roll the dough out into a large circle.
- Wrap the
smokies . Use one dough strip at a time to wrap each little smokie, one right after the other, so they are all connected. - Butter and sprinkle. Coat the dough with butter and sprinkle with parmesan cheese.
- Bake. Make sure to set the baking sheet on the bottom rack, to ensure the dough on the bottom bakes through.
- Butter and sprinkle again. Apply one last coating of decadent cheesy goodness!

Sausage Roll Crazy Bread Recipe
Ingredients
- 26 ounce lil’ smokies sausages
- 1 pound pizza dough, fresh or frozen (thawed)
- 6 tablespoons melted butter
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 1/2 cups marinara sauce
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Drain the lil’ smokies and set them on a paper towel to dry.
- Roll out the pizza dough into a 12-inch circle. Use a pizza cutter to cut the dough into long 1/2 inch thick strips.
- Place one strip of dough on the baking sheet. Press one lil’ smokie on the end of the dough strip and set it in the middle of the sheet. Press it down. Wrap the dough over the lil’ smokie and back down to the baking sheet, creating a loop around the mini sausage.
- Set another sausage on top of the dough strip, right next to the first lil' smokie. Press down. Wrap the dough strip over the sausage and back down on the baking sheet. *The pressing down ensures the dough is thin on the bottom so it will fully bake.
- Repeat the process of adding a sausage, pressing it down on the dough strip, then wrap the dough over the top. As you work, move the loops around the initial lil’ smokie creating a spiral pattern.
- When you come to the end of one strip of dough. Press the end of a new strip on top of it, creating one long connected piece of dough. Once all the dough strips are gone, use your hands to make sure your crazy bread is in the shape of a circle.
- Brush 3 tablespoons butter over the dough and sprinkle it with 1/4 cup of grated parmesan cheese. Place on the bottom rack of the oven for 35+ minutes.
- Bake until the center is puffed and the dough on the bottom is baked through. If the top starts to get dark, set a piece of foil loosely over the top.
- Once baked, brush the top with another coating of melted butter. Then sprinkle again with 1/4 cup parmesan cheese.
- Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping. You can pull out several little sausage rolls in the middle, creating a ring, to make room of a small cup of marinara.
