These Pear and Blue Cheese Strudel are incredibly easy to make with pre-made phyllo dough shells. Typically, homemade phyllo takes several hours to make, needing lots of chilling time in between creating those beautifully flaky layers of pastry. But thankfully, you can purchase perfect dough ready to go and save yourself a lot of time and energy!

Aren’t the flavors of sweet, crisp pear and strong, savory blue cheese just the ultimate craveable combination for the holiday season? Somehow both light and intense, these mini strudel cups will be a big hit at your festive gatherings.

  • Athens Mini Phyllo Shells
  • Ripe pears – diced
  • Onion – diced
  • Butter
  • Cinnamon
  • Blue Cheese – crumbled
  • Walnuts – chopped

How to Make Mini Pear and Blue Cheese Strudel

Try my incredibly easy strudel cups appetizer recipe for your next social event, and I guarantee guests will not be able to get enough of these sweet and savory bites!

1. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and sauté the diced onions for just a minute. Add the diced pear, and continue sautéing for a few more minutes. Sprinkle and mix in the cinnamon, salt and pepper.

2. Next, combine the crumbled blue cheese and the chopped walnuts in a medium bowl.

3. Fill each mini phyllo cup with the pear and onion mixture, and top with the crumbled blue cheese and walnuts. Gently place on a baking sheet.

TIP: Be sure to hold the mini phyllo cup over the blue cheese and walnut mixture bowl to help cut down on waste and messes!

4. Move an oven rack in the topmost position, and turn on the broiler. Place the baking sheet with the strudel cups on the top rack, and broil for only 1-2 minutes. Keep a close eye on the Strudel cups: you want the blue cheese to melt slightly and the walnuts to get toasted without getting burned.

5. Remove from oven, and sprinkle with minced chives to garnish.

These mini Pear and Blue Cheese Strudel cups can be whipped-up half an hour before your friends are due to arrive, served hot as a wonderful appetizer to kick off the festivities. You also can make them up to a full day in advance and keep in an airtight container until ready to serve at room temperature; or, place under the broiler for just a a minute or two to get the walnuts toasted and blue cheese slightly melted.

Pear and Blue Cheese Strudel cups will keep well in the freezer for up to one month, tightly wrapped in a layer of plastic wrap and then aluminum foil. Skip the original baking, and then simply broil for a couple of minutes either frozen or defrosted when you’re ready to enjoy.

Servings: 30 mini strudels

Ingredients

  • 2 boxes Athens Mini Phyllo Shells
  • 2 pears ripe but firm, diced
  • 1/2 small onion diced
  • 2 tablespoons  butter
  • 1/3 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese
  • 3/4 cup finely chopped walnuts
  • salt and pepper
  • chopped chives for garnish

Instructions

  • Heat the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions, and saute for 1-2 minutes. Then add the pears and saute another 3-4 minutes until just barley soft. Toss in the cinnamon and salt and pepper to taste.
  • Mix the blue cheese and walnuts in a bowl. Fill each mini fillo cup with pear mixture, then  top with the blue cheese mixture and gently place in a baking sheet. Holding the mini shells over the blue cheese bowl, while topping, helps eliminate the mess.
  • Turn on the broiler and raise a rack to the top position. Place the baking sheet on the top rack and watch carefully—they burn fast. Remove when the blue cheese is melting and the walnuts are slightly toasted—1-2 minutes. Sprinkle with chive and serve!
