Holy Guacamole! (Healthy and Authentic)
Holy Guacamole Recipe: How To Make Guacamole from scratch. Loaded with fresh ingredients, this easy guacamole recipe makes a marvelous topper for Mexican dishes, as well as a zesty appetizer.
Fresh Guacamole
Guacamole is one of those foods that when set in front of me, I have zero self-control. And I do mean ZERO.
I’m suddenly at the mercy of a bowl of green obsession and a bag of chips. Nothing will stop me from scooping and munching, scooping and munching, scooping and munching until someone identifies the issue at hand, and out of mercy, literally picks up the bowl and moves it out of my reach.
Apparently, there aren’t therapists for this…
However, I justify my addiction by continually telling myself that a good simple guacamole recipe is healthy. Which it is. Good fats, right?
But the 1 pound bag of tortilla chips I just ate, not so much.
Homemade Guacamole Recipe
Even so, my favorite Easy Guacamole Recipe is something we make almost every week when avocados are ripe and in season.
We dollop it on top of salads and Mexican favorites. We serve it with cocktails and chips on Friday afternoon.
We even make our easy guacamole recipe with breakfast scrambles and warm tortillas on the weekends. This guacamole dip is so versatile and tastes good on basically anything.
And since no one in my family is in a hurry to stop the cycle of never-ending dip, I think I’ll just keep making it. Because, why not?!
Easy Guacamole Recipe Ingredients
- Ripe Avocados – You want them to be a tad soft but not too mushy.
- Fresh lime juice – You can either buy limes and squeeze it yourself or the store-bought lime juice works too.
- Garlic – Glorious garlic!
- Jalapeño – Add one whole jalapeno or half depending on the desired spice level.
- Green onions – An essential flavor to provide zest to this dip.
- Cilantro – A staple flavor in almost all Mexican dishes to offer a pop of freshness.
- Plum tomatoes – For color, flavor, and texture.
- Salt and pepper – To taste, meaning add as much or as little as you like.
How To Make Guacamole, Holy Guacamole!
- Cut the avocados in half, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh out with a spoon. Place the avocado flesh in a medium bowl and pour the lime juice over the top. Use a spoon and fork to mash the avocado until mostly smooth.
- Smell your jalapeño to test the heat… You can usually tell if you got a spicy one. Stir in the garlic, jalapeño (half or all), green onions, and cilantro. Salt and pepper to taste. Stir in the diced tomato at the very end.
- Serve immediately, or press plastic wrap down over the surface of the guacamole, removing all air bubbles (this helps eliminate browning), and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Guacamole Mix-Ins
I do like to mix up my simple guacamole recipe, on occasion. Although I believe it to be fabulous on its own, sometimes it’s fun to add an element of surprise!
I usually stir in just one surprise ingredient, although the blue cheese and buffalo sauce are awfully nice together. Don’t be afraid and take a leap of faith! These mix-ins all are fabulous with this recipe. I promise.
Try making this recipe with the addition of:
- Crumbled Bacon – Wanting more crunch?
- Cooked Chorizo – Another flavor-packed Mexican ingredient to add to this dip!
- Crumbled Blue Cheese – If you like Blue Cheese, try this add-in!
- Drizzled with Buffalo Sauce – Drizzle as much or as little as you like.
- Fresh Pineapple, Mango, or Strawberries – Check out my Mango Guacamole too!
- Chopped Radishes or Jicama –Wanting more bitterness? Or how about a sweet nutty flavor?
- Feta Cheese + Sun Dried Tomatoes – Looking to add a Mediterranean twist?
- Chipotle Peppers – More spice and more smokiness!
- Capers – Looking for some tang to go along with the zestiness?
- Smoked Almonds – Smokiness and nuttiness, plus more good fats.
The weekend is almost here… Why not set up a guacamole bar with stir-in toppings your friends can add themselves.
That and a margarita bar sounds like pure Cinco de Mayo bliss!

Frequently Asked Questions:
Is Guacamole Healthy?
The main ingredient that makes guacamole healthy is the avocados, because they are filled with healthy fats. However, all the fresh product provides valuable nutrients in a raw unadulterated form.
This plant-based fat boosts health and brain function and can also help reduce the risk of strokes or heart disease.
Can you freeze guacamole?
Yes, guacamole can be frozen for up to three months in an air-tight container. Make sure to squeeze out all the air in the container.
When ready to use, thaw in the refrigerator for 6-8 hours.
How do I know that my avocados are ripe enough to use?
If you gently press the avocado slightly, you should be able to feel the softness of the inside. Just be careful not to squeeze them too hard, or you will bruise the unripened avocados.
Also, where the avocado was attached by the stem, you can peel the “button” off and see if the inside is green or yellow.
How do you keep guacamole from browning?
The best way to save fresh or leftover guacamole from browning is to place it in an airtight container. Smooth the top in a flat surface.
Squeeze just a little extra lime juice on top of the guacamole, tilting the container to make sure it coats the entire surface.
Then press a piece of plastic wrap against the surface to seal off any air. Cover with a tight lid and refrigerate.
When ready to use, you can pour off or mix in the added lime juice barrier.
