Instant Pot Spiced Apples (Cinnamon Apples)

Instant Pot Spiced Apples – The perfect “baked” cinnamon apples recipe cooked in 1 minute! Spiced, soft and silky!

Spiced Apples

Apples Bring Fall Greetings

Regardless of what the official calendar states, in my mind September 1st marks the beginning of fall.

No matter how warm it is outside, or how tightly the green leaves cling to the trees… That is when I will pull out my cozy autumn recipes with unabashed joy.

I will cheerfully shine up my slow cooker, pressure cooker, and heavy iron cookware as I contemplate hearty stews, braised meats, pumpkin desserts, and of course, apple recipes.

I just can’t seem to help myself. There is no better season for bountiful home cooking, so I like to extend fall cooking for as long as humanly possible.

Who’s with me?

Tis The Season

First, on the agenda this year are apple recipes.

Although apple cakes, pies, and breads are always family favorites, I like to start with a simple apple recipe that can be served as both a sweet or savory dish… Spiced Apples.

This year I’ve been making them in the digital pressure cooker with great results. (Ok, okay, so I started fall cooking a tad before September 1st.)

Although cinnamon spiced apples can be made on the stovetop, baked in the oven, or slow cooked, the pressure cooker method is a great option, because it is so fast and hands-free.

Plus, pressure-cooking the apples creates a decadent silky texture.

Great Kitchen Finds

I recently tested the Ambiano Digital Pressure Cooker from ALDI, and found it is an amazing kitchen tool and value at just $39.99. (Available for a limited time only!)

Although not as well-known as the name brand pressure cookers out there, the Ambiano Digital Pressure Cooker offers all the settings and features of the top of the line models for nearly one-quarter of the price. (I bought my first electric pressure cooker for $150. Yikes!)

You can use it to sauté, slow cook, steam, and of course pressure cook, from as little as 1 minute, or for hours and hours.

The Ambiano Digital Pressure Cooker offers huge functionality, and reduces the need for extra countertop appliances. Plus, it has a nonstick coating for easy clean up!

Ava keeps threatening me that when she heads off for college in a few years she’s taking this pressure cooker to her dorm room.

She’s a smart girl.

So if you can’t afford an Instant Pot, or just like to be frugal, you can find electric pressure cookers that work just as well as an Instant Pot for much less.

What Kind of Apples Make the Best Instant Pot Spiced Apples?

The type of apple you select for any recipe is always the first thing to consider. When baking or cooking apples you want to pick a variety that is extremely firm and will hold its shape under heat.

All apples break down a little once cooked. However, some apples will turn to mush when cooked, such as Golden or Red Delicious.

I like to use firm Granny Smith apples from most recipes. However, McIntosh and Honeycrisp apples are also good choices.

Although, I personally feel it’s a shame not to just bite into Honeycrisp apples raw. *wink*

How to Make Cinnamon Apples

Making spiced apples for pork chops or as a dessert topper could not be easier, when using a pressure cooker.

  1. You simply peel, core, and slice the apples.
  2. Then dump all the ingredients into the pressure cooker.
  3. Lock the lid and set the timer for 1 minute. That’s right… ONE MINUTE.

In almost no time, you will have luxuriously soft cinnamon apples that make the perfect southern side dish.

I like to add a little apple cider to my recipe for a deeper apple flavor, and found all the ingredients I needed for this recipe at ALDI!

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I use instead of cider?

Apple Juice is a great substitute for the cider if you cannot find it.

Can I use any apple variety that I have on hand?

Yes. However, the rule of thumb is that “cooking apples” should be firm and slightly tart in their raw state. That way, they don’t turn to mush as they cook.

How long do they last in the fridge or freezer?

These apples can stay in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days, or you can freeze them for 3-4 months. Make sure to label your dates so that you know how long you have until you need to use them up!

    • Hi Becky,

I’m not sure about that specific variety. However, the rule of thumb is that cooking apples should be very firm and slightly tart in their raw state. Hope this helps!
