Summer Grilling: Sweet and Sour Grilled Salmon with Pineapple Salsa
Have you dusted off your grill yet this season?
During the summer we grill every week. I would guess about half to three-quarters of our meals come off the grill during the months of May through late September.
Why? Grilling is a great way to:
- Keep the heat out of your house.
- Reduce clean up.
- Produce healthy lean meals without a lot of extra cooking fat.
Perfect Grilled Salmon
Although we have several go-to grilled salmon recipes we enjoy making again and again, this season I’ve discovered a new quick salmon dish that my husband and kids rave about… Sweet and Sour Grilled Salmon with Pineapple Salsa.
Tangy sweet and sour sauce and luxurious salmon fillets are a winning combination. The sticky-sweet sauce perfectly balances the richness of the fish, and creates a lovely glistening glaze over the top that turns crispy around the edges.
Adding a simple pineapple salsa on top of the salmon offers an extra pop of tropical flavor and texture for a hot-cold sensation you will crave.
Is Salmon Healthy?
Yes, this is a Healthy Salmon Recipe!
Salmon is a great source of protein and is loaded with Omega-3 Fatty Acids, B Vitamins, and Potassium.

How Long Does It Take To Cook Salmon?
Salmon is a wonderful quick-cook fish, that cooks into delicate flakes in mere minutes. Depending on the thickness (and size) of your salmon fillets, it will cook in as little as 7 minutes, or up to 20 minutes.
Be sure not to overcook the salmon! Salmon tastes best when it’s just barely cooked through. You don’t want it to be mushy, but you also don’t want it to be dry.
Perfectly cooked salmon should have moist tender flakes.
On the Grill
If you place a whole salmon fillet over a medium-heat grill it will take approximately 7-10 minutes to cook.
Thick individually-cut salmon pieces will also take 7-10 minutes, while thin-cut pieces will take about 5 minutes.
In the Oven
If you don’t have a grill, you can still make this Sweet and Sour Grilled Salmon with Pineapple Salsa recipe in the oven.
It will take 8-15 minutes to bake.

How Do I Know If Salmon Is Cooked?
It’s best to check your salmon after the shortest cook time to make sure you do not overcook it.
Use the touch test! Poke the thickest part of the salmon with your finger. It should bounce back, and feel firm, but not hard.
If it feels mushy leave it on the grill or in the oven.
If you are not sure after touching it, use a fork to flake off the corner. It should come apart in thick moist flakes.
What Should The Internal Temperature Of Cooked Salmon Be?
If you don’t trust your salmon-poking abilities, you can insert a thermometer into the thickest part of the salmon.
Take it off the heat source when it reaches 140 degrees F. Then allow it to rest so it reaches 145 degrees F.
Can You Eat Salmon Skin?
Or should you remove the salmon skin?
Yes, you can definitely eat salmon skin. However, some people find it too fishy to be enjoyable.
I like to cook salmon with the skin on, then let my family choose to leave the skin on their plate or gobble it up.
Although, sometimes when you grill salmon, the grill decides to remove the skin for you, as you lift the salmon off the grill.
How to Grill Salmon
When I grill a whole salmon fillet, I like to oil the top and grill it skin-side-up for just a couple minutes to form grill marks.
Then carefully flip the whole fillet over using two spatulas, and continue cooking until it’s just cooked through.
How to Baked Salmon
To bake a whole salmon fillet, there’s not need to flip it.
Simply preheat the oven to 350 degrees F, place it on a baking sheet, skin-side-down, and bake the salmon for 8-14 minutes.
