Disclaimer: Before I write anything else, let me state… I am not a doctor, nutritionist, or holistic healer.

I am simply a friend helping a friend. And I thought maybe what I’ve been working on for my friend might be helpful to some of you.

Therefore, please do your own research on the Budwig Diet and Protocol and don’t just take my word for it. Thanks!

Natural Cancer Treatments

A year ago, I had never heard of the German scientist Johanna Budwig and her simple cancer-fighting blend of ingredients.

Yet in the last twelve months, three of my personal friends have tragically discovered a family member battling late-stage cancer.

In all three cases, when radiation and chemotherapy produced no change, these individuals stumbled upon the Budwig Protocol as a last resort.

Miraculously, all three people are now in remission.

I was told this exact same story, not once, but three times over the course of several months, by people I trust dearly.

It made me wonder why I’m just now learning about the Budwig Protocol.

One friend, in particular, told me the story of her father’s recovery and explained the simple blend of ingredients that destroyed his cancer.

He ate the “Budwig Protocol” multiple times a day as a natural treatment, and now in remission, eats it once a day for upkeep.

However, these ingredients have a strong pungent flavor and are not always easy to swallow. Especially when you’re sick.

Therefore my friend asked me if I could help create some Simple Budwig Protocol Recipes to make it taste better.

What Is The Budwig Protocol?

This simple recipe, called the Budwig Protocol, is to be freshly mixed and eaten immediately, several times a day if you are battling cancer. It’s also been shown to be great for cancer prevention!

  • 2 tablespoons organic cottage cheese (or quark)
  • 1 tablespoon organic cold-pressed flax oil (usually refrigerated)
  • 1 tablespoon organic freshly ground flax seeds

Sounds simple enough, right?

The trick is, in order for the ingredients to produce a strong cancer-fighting chemical reaction when they are mixed together, there is an exact method, as well as a few stipulations.

Budwig Protocol Guide

  • The flax seeds must be freshly ground, right before mixing with the other ingredients. This requires a coffee or spice grinder.
  • The cottage cheese and flax oil must be pureed into a creamy paste, that resembles whipped butter. Use a small cup and an immersion blender to do this.
  • The ground flax seeds are then mixed into the cheese blend by hand.
  • And the mixture must be eaten within 15 minutes.
  • One more thing… You should not disturb the chemical reaction, by pureeing it further with other ingredients, or by heating it. Therefore, recipes for the Budwig Protocol are a little tricky.

High-quality flax oil has a strong earthy flavor that is tough on the tastebuds.

Yet, I did learn you can gently mix ingredients in, as long as they are not forcefully blended.

How Does The Budwig Diet and Protocol Work?

According to my friends, the research they sent me, and what I have found online…

Dr. Johanna Budwig, a biochemist, found that if you combine sulfur-based protein (found in cottage cheese) with omega 3-rich flax oil, the protein acts as a carrier to help the unsaturated fatty omega 3s attach to hemoglobin cells, enhancing their ability to carry oxygen.

The chemical reaction that takes place when you blend these ingredients together, also makes the flax oil water-soluble, so it can easily enter the cells.

Dr. Budwig says these two tiny occurrences allow your body to heal itself. They are essentially jumpstarting your cells so they can fight off cancer!

I should tell you, when you start your own research you will read that “There is no evidence the Budwig Protocol cures cancer.”

However, there are literally thousands of testimonies as well, from people who followed the Budwig Protocol and are now living full healthy lives.

As somewhat of a conspiracy theorist, it’s my opinion that big pharma companies would prefer we not cure ourselves (of anything) with healthy foods and exercise. Furthermore, they are usually “the money” behind big medical studies. Just saying.

What Is The Budwig Diet?

Along with the Budwig Protocol, there is a clean healthy diet to help your body help itself.

The Budwig Diet Consists Of:

  • Lean organic proteins like chicken and fish.
  • Lots of fresh vegetables
  • Nuts
  • Fermented foods

According To Budwig, You Should Not Eat:

  • Processed or refined foods
  • Sugars (including most fruits)
  • Most grains
  • Other forms of dairy

It’s similar to a Paleo diet, but a little more restrictive on sweet foods, because cancer loves sugar in any form.

As I spoke with my three friends, one stated her family member followed the strict Budwig Diet along with daily doses of the protocol.

The second friend told me her family member was so sick the just had to eat whatever they could get down. So the diet was only partially followed.

The third said her dad ate whatever he wanted, and just took the Protocol religiously.

So why am I sharing all of this with you? Two reasons…

First, I hope that if you, or someone you love, is battling cancer, you might consider looking into alternative forms of healing, along with traditional western medicine.

Doctors don’t know everything. No one does. And there isn’t one treatment that seems to work for everybody. So there’s no harm in trying different things.

Second, if you are already using the Budwig Diet, and are finding it hard to swallow, I’m here to help!

As mentioned above, I’ve been working on these Budwig Diet Recipes for one of my friends and have come up with three quick spreads that taste so much better than the Budwig Protocol on its own.

I hope you enjoy them. Here’s to your health!

  1. I was told if you don’t eat it within 15 minutes, the ground flaxseed makes the mixture turn to a snot like substance. Very unappetizing. I don’t use the ground flaxseed. I use cottage cheese and flax oil, mix them together with immersion blender then add some plain yogurt and a few splashes of kefir if it’s to thick. Then I eat it in a bowl with blueberries and put granola on top and eat it for breakfast.

  2. Someone asked what happens if you don’t consume the mixture within 25 minutes? It is actually best to consume it within 10 to 15 minutes. It is my understanding that it is because after you grind refrigerated whole flaxseeds, they become rancid after they have been mixed in the cottage cheese and oil. Maybe that’s why some people think it doesn’t taste very good. If you eat it the minute it’s all mixed together it’s not bad at all.

    • Hi Nancy, was this the recipe you were following? How many times a day do you eat it? We have just had someone diagnosed with it, and are trying to figure out what steps to take.

  3. My husband used the Budwig protocol only while undergoing chemo and radiation for esophageal cancer eight years ago! He also had surgery, and all screening for cancer over the last eight years have been negative! We continue with the daily protocol because we believe it is preserving our joints and is good for the digestion and overall good health. And by the way, we don’t mind the flavor at all. We look forward to our daily “dose”. It is good for breakfast with a little chopped fruit and a sprinkling of granola on top! Good luck in your health journey!

  4. I found about the Budwig protocol about 5 years ago.  Completely agree about most everything you say …  except that the mixture tastes bad. Bland sure …fancy recipes aren’t required but thoughtful.  ….   Tossing almonds and fruit and maybe even a bit of stevia .. can’t recall if that’s a bad thing – but makes it totally yum.   I think it’s also best to eat it’s on its own if looking for the most benefits ??  Instead of on an English muffin ??   Your readers might  also like to know that the clinic that  helped themselves to the doctors name are not of the same ilk as Joanna.  The budwig clinic has nothing to do with Dr Budwig  b  Think his name is Jenkins or something ..  point is – they seem to be another clinic looking to capitalize on cancer.    No money in passing around a recipe or the full diet.    I find it astounding that people are herded into chemicals for answers to illness.    Perhaps post the link that tells more of Dr Budwigs story … it’s fascinating.     To your readers …. This biochemist did a great thing in coming up with this protocol as opposed to creating drugs.   Can’t hurt to try it … 😊. Worst case scenario Is it has to be good for you …. So there is no worst case here. As opposed to popping a couple pills each day.  Sure .  Might help or Mask one ailment but the potential side effects with most pills ..  common sense …   Try it out !!

  5. Thank you for these tips! God bless!

  6. What happens if the mixture is not consumed within 25 mins?

  7. I was diagnosed with a brain tumour 14 years ago and I found and followed the Budwig diet, there was no mention of eating the mixture within 15 minutes. Is this in any of her books, if so which one?

  8. 3 Budwig Diet cheese recipes you share are great. I appreciate these 3 formulas.

  9. I don’t think these types of cheese are good for my stomach but I do love eating them, I’ll try at lunch time, not breakfast.

  10. Thank you for trying to make focc more palatable. However, I think you don’t quite know what Dr Budwig advised. A single serving should consist of 6T cottage cheese and 3T flaxseed oil blended together with 1-2T freshly ground flaxseeds added to create a muesli. Other flavorings can be added then. And fruits can be layered on or mixed in like a parfait. If the ‘cream ‘ is too thick a few tablespoons of milk or fresh juice can be used to thin it. The basic focc mixture should be consumed in the morning after a half cup of fresh sauerkraut juice (from homemade or unpasteurized sauerkraut) on an empty stomach and a cup of warm herbal or green tea. The second serving should ideally be eaten after a big raw salad lunch as a dessert pudding. The patient’s appetite and capacity dictate what can actually be eaten. I have tried different fruits and juices to make it more palatable and easier for my husband to eat but he has difficulty downing it and sometimes feels nauseated an hour or so later. It’s not so much the flavor as the texture that’s hard for him. Even thinning it to drink hasn’t helped much because the volume increases. But he has had better energy and sleep, better appetite and regular elimination -all huge improvements! Just wish I could find a way to make it go down and stay down easier. Many people have no issues with it though. And many, but not all, have become cancer free.

    • Susan,
My friend gave me this recipe for A-fib. After 8 weeks of this protocol I no longer have any heart issues.
I use a regular mouth 1/2 pint canning jar and add 6 oz. of organic cottage cheese, 1T. Barlean’s organic flaxseed oil and add almost to the top with lemonade*. (*Equal amounts of fresh lemon juice and pure maple syrup, 1/4 tsp. each of cayenne powder and powdered ginger… shake well before each use). Use the bottom blade from a blender- attach to the canning jar and puree til smooth. I’ve topped it with blueberries or strawberries. I didn’t use the fresh ground flaxseeds but can see how it would be highly beneficial. I eat this recipe infrequently now and have not had any heart issues. I know this is talking about cancer but she treated lots of different dis eases with her pro tocol. I think it’s the flaxseed oil! Blessings

  11. How many times should take? That  substitute a meal ? Thanks

    • Hi Katia,

I think it depends on the condition of the person taking it. Please click the links in the post to learn more about the protocol. I am not an expert. As mentioned, I made these recipes for a friend, and thought I’d share them here as well.

    • Hi Katia, you can buy Joanna Budwig’s book the pil and protein diet. It is pretty specific of the things you eat and drink; as well as certain times of the day.

These recipes would be used for the lunch part of the diet. ASPICYPERSPECTIVE did an excellent job. I am going to try these, thank you for you time and talents putting together these recipes.

  12. Each of these is simply delicious! I will be sharing this recipe with quite a few people!

  13. I have never heard of this until now. I only wish I saw this when my dad had cancer years ago.

  14. Wow! This was super interesting! I’d never heard of this diet before. Thank you for sharing!

  15. I can’t wait make this again! So easy to make and so good!

  16. All of these look absolutely tasty. Whipping some up this weekend.

  17. I’m sharing these recipes with some friends who are currently battling cancer, as well as my MIL. THANK YOU!

  18. These spreads are amazing and I love that they are health conscious!

  19. Very interesting! I like reading about alternative ways to heal the body. Is there a particular honey your friends used? I keep Manuka honey in my pantry.

  20. I’ve never heard of this, but wow, sounds like magic!

  21. What an interesting diet! Your spreads are definitely more palatable than the plain protocol. I’m sure many will be happy for a tastier version!

  22. This is so interesting and I have never heard of this before! One question. If you are not supposed to have anything sweet like fruit or sugar then what about the honey?
Thank you for this post and any other information of this type !

    • Hi Pam,

Honestly, I don’t know how strict you have to be… As mentioned in the post, two of the three friends’ family members did not follow the diet, but still had success.

If you want to give it a try, or I would click through the links also look at Budwig user forums as well.
