Smoke and Mirrors Cocktail
Lot’s of people think of grenadine as that neon red stuff found behind lots of bars that make cocktails turn candy-sweet.
A traditional grenadine is actually a rich and bright pomegranate syrup that is surprisingly easy to make. In this Smoke & Mirrors Cocktail it’s paired with smoky mezcal for a complex, but easy sipping drink.
Smoke And Mirrors Cocktail Recipe
This tangy, sweet, smoky and vibrant weekend beverage, the Smoke & Mirrors Cocktail, is a dance of intricate flavors.ย
Servings: 1 drink
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 ounces blanco tequila
- 1/2 ounce mezcal I like using Del Maguey Vida here. If you use a less smoky Mezcal, it might be good to use an ounce of both the Mezcal and the Blanco
- 1/2 ounce grenadine see recipe below
- 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
To make Grenadine:
- 2 cups pomegranate juice Make sure it's 100% pomegranate; POM Wonderful is a good brand
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 cups pomegranate molasses
- 1 teaspoon orange blossom water
Instructions
For the Grenadine:
- Heat pomegranate juice until just before a boil. Remove from heat and add the sugar, pomegranate molasses, and orange blossom water. Stir to dissolve, and let cool.
For the Smoke & Mirrors Cocktail:
- Shake all ingredients together and pour into a rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with lime and some fresh pomegranate seeds.

Yum!
Ohhhh, I just made this with the regular ol’ grenadine. Really good! Ya can’t go wrong with lime and tequila!
I imagine the homemade grenadine must be a whole different ball game from the mass produced stuff— great recipe!
I am SO trying that homemade grenadine! How fun! Pinned!
