Irish Cheese Toasties
Best Cheese Toasties – This classic snack recipe makes an Irish-style cheese on toast with eggs, Worcestershire, and Dijon mustard. It’s cheesy, savory, toasty, and oh-so-satisfying!

Why We Love This Cheese Toastie Recipe
Cheese Toasties are a fabulously decadent breakfast, lunch, or snack in most parts of the UK. There are many variations between the United Kingdom countries, as well as regions within each country. A classic British Cheese Toastie is similar to an American grilled cheese sandwich, but also contains a bit of Worcestershire sauce, and sometimes herbs or mustard. It is then cooked in a grill pan to create defined grill marks.
However, an Irish Cheese Toastie (also called Cheese on Toast) is most commonly served open-faced. The cheese is mixed with egg to become extra puffy on top when baked!
We personally like this version because it feels significantly different than American grilled cheese, but is still a familiar and comforting food. You will have a cheesy, eggy delight with crispy outside edges and a soft, cheesy center! Itโs easy to make in the oven, and is perfect to curb a fatty-carb craving any time of day.
Ingredients You Need
- Sliced bread – brown, potato, white, or multi-grain
- Butter – unsalted, softened
- Eggs – for a yummy boost of protein
- Dijon mustard – adds a great tangy flavor to balance the richness of the eggs and cheese
- Worcestershire sauce – gives the cheese toastie a slightly savory taste
- Aged Irish cheddar cheese – or your favorite sharp cheddar cheese
- Black pepper – freshly cracked
- Fresh chives – chopped

This really tastes good. We have tried for breakfast and we love it.
This was pretty simple to make and tasty too. Lots of cheese though. Donโt know how healthy that is. Had mine with a slice of turkey bacon. I used butter bread. I used just about half the amount of cheese and I still had extra. I also used only one tablespoon Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Had 2 slices for breakfast. Was very filling.ย
You knew it wasn’t “healthy” before you made it so why comment on it?
Just make the recipe, relax, enjoy it and don’t waste our time with you’re “not healthy” comment. I’ve made this and it is outstanding for what it is.
We use to have cheese on toast for tea. It was made under the grill, first toast one side of bread flip over lay slices of cheddar and grill till melted and if you feel daring spread tomato sauce (ketchup) or even better Branson pickle. The grill was eye level and I wish I had one today. Oh yes don’t forget a good cup of tea.
some times a little bit of curry powder is mixed in – that’s my favourite !!
