Comeback Sauce… The quintessential southern dipping sauce is served with everything from fried oysters to raw veggies.

It’s a poor man’s remoulade, made with mayonnaise, ketchup, hot sauce, and a couple of other well-selected ingredients.

If you are a southerner, have ever lived in the south, or wish you lived in the south, you should know how to make classic Southern Comeback Sauce.

What Ingredients You Will Need

For The Condiment

  • A Cup Mayonnaise (could be low-fat mayo)
  • A few Tablespoons Ketchup
  • A Few Tablespoons Honey
  • A Tablespoon of Hot Sauce
  • Cajun Seasoning
  • Worchestershire sauce

What Equipment You Will Need

  • Small Bowl 
  • Spoon/Whisk

How To Make Comeback Sauce Recipe

To make Southern Comeback Sauce start with mayonnaise and add just enough ketchup to taint it orange.

Then add a little honey, a little Worcestershire sauce, a little cajun seasoning, and hot sauce. The hot sauce you select is extremely personal… Your favorite hot/spicy flavor. 

Really, you can use any kind of hot sauce you like.

SrirachaFrank’s RedHot, and Cholula are three I always have on hand. Or you can go with something a tad more simple like Tabasco.

Why Do They Call It Comeback Sauce?

Word on the street is that it comes from a Greek restaurant in Mississippi, where they would use it on salad and saltines. The name came from the common goodbye greeting they use in the south. Y’all Comeback Now!

  2. Comeback Sauce: simple and good. If like me you’re calorie conscious, you can use two of my favorite ingredients: Hellmann’s Light Mayonaise and Heinz No Sugar Added Ketchup. Maybe it’s just from long use, but I can’t tell the difference between these two items and their more fattening original versions. I’ve recently discovered Walker & Sons’ “Slap Ya Mama” Cajun seasoning, which has replaced Emeril’s Seasoning in my kitchen.

  7. This looks great. Making up a batch for fried catfish patties for our Kentucky Derby Party today. Will probably use 3/4 tbl of honey and 3/4 tbl of sweet chili sauce in mine. I’m always looking to add sweet chili sauce whenever I can. If you ever decide to add a 4th hot sauce to your stash, I highly recommend Crystal’s. I already have the 3 you mentioned in the house. Great minds…………………..
