Can I tell you a little secret?
When Iโm entertaining, I like to shock my party guests a bit with the menu I serve.
If we’re having a casual get-together, like a sports event or yard party, I like to serve dishes that are slightly more elegant than expected.
However, if weโre having a dinner party or wine tasting, I like to serve dishes that are slightly more casual than expected. (Like glammed-up burgers or chicken pot pie.)
I do this for a few reasonsโฆ
One, when we have a dinner party, everyone always expects my food to be outrageously elegant because I cook for a living. They come over expecting to have to be on their best behavior. Serving casual dishes puts people at ease, and acts as a conversation starter.
Two, when weโre having a casual get-together, I get tired of the same olโ chicken wings and cheese dip. Donโt you?
Three, giving people what they arenโt expecting, makes the event more memorable!
Bagels may not seem like fancy food. Yet, Iโve discovered you can dress them up to fit any occasion.
These simple 5-Ingredient Bagel Bites with Steak and Blue Cheese walk the line between casual and elegant. They start with tender Thomasโ Mini Bagels that have been toasted to golden perfection.
What Ingredients You Will Need
- Rib Eye Steak
- Thomasโ Plain Mini Bagels
- Fresh Basil – a large bundle
- Balsamic Glaze
- Blue Cheese – any variety
How to Make Mini Bagel Steak Bites
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Preheat the grill to high heat. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
Season the rib-eye steak(s) with kosher salt and black pepper. Once the grill is hot, grill the steak(s) for 2-4 minutes per side to reach your desired level of doneness. Remove from the grill and cover loosely with foil for at least 5 minutes.
Twist the Thomasโ Mini Bagels to separate. Place the bagel halves, cut side up on the prepared baking sheet. Toast for 5-8 minutes.
Meanwhile, remove the basil leaves from their stems. Slice the steak into thin strips/bite-size pieces, against the grain. Slice the blue cheese into thin shards.
Once the bagels are out of the oven, top each half with 1-2 basil leaves, then 1-2 slices of steak. Drizzle with balsamic glaze and top with shards of fresh blue cheese. Serve warm.
